Posts: 249 04/21/08 07:17 PM	I just got off the phone with my brother-in law and he told me that Mom seemed more confused than usual this morning and then fell as she was trying to get to the bathroom. They had to get the paramedics to get her up off the floor and it was decided she needed to go to the E. R. Preliminary x-rays were negative for broken bones, but John said Mom's right knee was black and blue. Mom was admitted for overnight observation and her regular physician will proably see her in the morning when he does his usual hospital rounds. We already knew Mom (who has Alzheimer's) was getting to the point that she needed more care than my sister Anita and my brother-in law could provide......and were just waiting for a private room to open up at the selected nursing home. Your prayers for this situation are most welcome and needed. For my sister too, as her health is not the best either. I will update you when I know more if at all possible. Thanks. Posts: 1378 04/22/08 12:50 AM	I'm so sorry this has happened, mT. One can be grateful that no bones were broken, but I know it's just so hard to see this, for all of you. Lord, please be with the family as they see their mother fading. It is a heart-wrenching thing to see our loved ones dwindling from the once strong vibrant persons we've come to know and love in life, to helpless and fully dependent people who seem like strangers. Give mT and her hubby and her sister and brother-in-law some peace in this. Open a door at the care facility so that they can be assured that their mother will be in good hands and the best care possible given. Give these wonderful care-givers respite and help them through this difficult transition. Help 'mom' to be comfortable at the hospital, protect her from serious complications from the fall, and keep her out of pain. Let things work out so that she soon will be settled in her new place and just give the sisters comfort at the realization that their once-so-capable mom must be there for her own good and theirs. Give them all peace and your loving care, in Jesus' name we ask these things, amen. Just know that your mom and you and sister (and hubbies) are all in our prayers, hon. and let us know how it goes. lin

Help open up a care facility quickly if it is the time for her mom to go to one and give all concerned wisdom to know how best to help mT's mom. Let you reign in their lives and give them the assurance that they may need.

Posts: 249 04/22/08 07:14 PM	We won't know the results of the tests/scan they took today until tomorrow, but according to my sister Anita, Mom is resting comfortably. Apparently Mom's mental condition began deteriorating fairly rapidly in the last week, a case of the Alzheimer's drugs no longer working. I am grateful for the time the drugs gave us to be able to talk and laugh with her. Today she was too confused to talk to me on the phone........sad, but not surprising. I've know for quite a while that each phone call might be the last. Lin, thank you for that beautiful prayer. Somehow you always find the perfect words that comfort, soothe, and strengthen. Your words fit perfectly with my own prayer for rest and peace, for Mom and for the rest of the family. For the rest of you, thank you for your prayers. You'll never know how much they mean to me. Posts: 249 04/24/08 09:01 AM	Mom was transfered to the nursing home yesterday. Miraculously, there was a private room available and my sister says the room is lovely and has a nice view. Everyone getting used to her being there, especially Mom, is going to take some time however. So my prayer request is for the Lord's peace, particularly for Mom. Alzheimer's patients get very anxious and confused when faced with change and a change of living quarters and being cared for by strangers is a particularly major stress. So you know, I'll be going down to spend time with Mom, probably a couple weeks at a time. There is danger that Mom will either try to sit down when when there's nothing behind her or will try to get out of bed to go to the bathroom unassisted and you know the staff can't be everywhere they're needed at once. I guess I'll finally have the time to get to some of the books I've been meaning to read while she sleeps. Unfortunately nursing homes aren't big on internet access, so my ability to keep you all imformed will be somewhat limited. You know, I really appreciate you ladies and Wolfie more than you know. Each of you faces daily pain and physical challenges I can not imagine, yet here you are comforting me. In case you didn't know it, I think you're all pretty special and absolutely amazing people. Thank you much & {{{hugs}}} for watching out for us. You are so appreciated!! mamaT... It's a real answer to our prayers that she was able to get into the home. Bless your heart, I know all of this has been such a concern for you and anita, Roger and John. It will take a bit to get to the place where you all feel more "comfortable" with the situation, but your going there to spend time will help tremendously. If you need anything while away, just have Roger email me or post. In the interim, you KNOW that you are all (especially mom) in our prayers. And hon, listen...you are very special to us too..."just so you know". And our hearts and prayers will be w/you while you're away & we will rejoice to see you able to get back here with us again - whenever that may be. We hope not too awfully long stretches at a time (we'll miss you), but fully understand that you must spend time w/your beloved mom right now. You all take care! Read and maybe sometime you can slip up to the local library there & log in??? who knows??? Posts: 249 04/25/08 03:47 PM	Shoot......I've been running errands and doing laundry in order to be ready tomorrow and I'm beat. How do you all manage to keep putting one foot in front of the other when your bodies perpetually rebel? I mean, REALLY! As it now stands, I'm headed towards Indiana tomorrow (Saturday) and I'll be there a couple weeks. Roger's driving me down and will drive back on Sunday. I'll be taking the night shift, light duty, but then the staff won't let us do anything anyway. I'll be back after Mother's Day if all goes well. Your prayers are a true blessing.......gotta be what's keeping me sane! I'll try to drop in from time to time to let you know what's going on. Posts: 1378 05/06/08 11:47 PM	Dear Friends, I haven't had a lot of access to the internet lately, so don't worry about it. I hope things are OK with you all. Please forgive the "blanket e-mail. I do not intend a slight to anyone, but I don't have a lot of time online and my index fingers seem to be going arthritic. Mom is adjusting to being in the nursing home, but of course some days are better than others. Balancing her medications, particularly one of the Alzheimer's drugs is kinda tricky. If she has too much in her system, she's drowsy, crabby, and uncooperative and if she has too little she's all over the place and it's unsafe to leave her alone for even a second. Trying to find the right balance is a bit like trying to herd cats. I really hate Alzheimer's or regular dementia, whichever it is, and hope they find something that will cure or at least stop it from progressing before most of our generation ends up in Alzheimer's homes or worse. I think research is headed in the right direction, but the wait is utterly excruciating. The father of a young acquaintance of mine (age 14-15) on a messageboard I frequent is facing the same thing with his fairly young dad too. My situation isn't fun, but I can't imagine what it would be like to be only a teenager and fored to watch your dad slip away mentally....perhaps not even remembering who you are when he should be in the stands cheering while you play basketball or giving you the high five for a great report card. As always, I am grateful for your prayers and thoughts. I am convinced they are the safety net under our family right now. Hope to write more later in the week. M.E.

Posts: 249 05/10/08 06:12 PM	I finally have a few minutes to write what's been going on here. It's being an interesting time here in Indiana. We are still trying to work out the best medicine routine for Mother and trying to figure out what should be used, how much, and what can be discontinued. We also thought Mom had caught the flue bug that has been affecting patient and staff alike, but it seem it was mostly the Numenda (sp) ,an Alzheimer's drug, that was turning her into an irritated zombie. Sometimes its hard to know the difference between drug side effects and various intestinal bugs. Oh, we also had an interesting adventure on Thursday. Quite a number of years ago, my mother had an experiemental dental implant that consists of a metal bar that holds her bottom denture permanently in place,.i.e,. is not to come out. Apparently a CNA decided that she needed to have her dentures cleaned and somehow pried out the denture. Perhaps it was already partly loose, but we may never know for sure. Anyway, consider that my sister had to call all over town to find a dentist qualified to reattach Mom's denture, the fact she was semi-zombied by the Numenda, and having to take the nursing home bus to the dentist in the pouring rain and having to hold Mother still while they dealt with the denture issue.........it was quite a day. Thankfully the home said up front that they'd pay for all expenses related to the incident, although it doesn't pay for Mom's pain and suffering and the anxiety my sister and I had to endure. Truly God's mercy was with us, correcting the mistakes made by man and the absolute miracle that neither denture was broken in the process. Yes, the second denture was imperiled too because the dental assistant brushed against the container and her top denture ended up on the floor. BTW, I am staying an extra week and hoping that we can get things a bit more in order. I also get to spend Mother's Day with my mom for a change. If all goes well, I'll be back home next Sunday.
